Vinyl siding is the budget-friendly option that still makes sense on a lot of Greater Vancouver homes — rentals, infill, and anywhere a low-maintenance exterior matters more than a premium finish. It never needs painting, won’t rot, and rinses clean of the algae and grime our damp climate leaves on shaded, north-facing walls.
The trade-off is in the details. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, so it has to be hung loose, nailed centred in the slots and never face-tight, or it buckles in summer heat and cracks in a cold snap. We pair it with a proper drainage plane behind the panels so the wind-driven rain that slips past the joints has somewhere to drain rather than soaking the sheathing.
Modern vinyl comes in deeper profiles and insulated backings that look far better than the thin stock of decades past, and the colour runs through the whole panel so scratches don’t show. We install new vinyl, re-side over sound substrate, and repair storm or impact damage — matching profiles and finishing the trims, soffit, and fascia cleanly.
