Ventilation is the part of a roof nobody sees and almost everyone underestimates. In our damp climate a poorly vented attic traps warm, moist air that condenses on the underside of the sheathing, quietly growing mould and rotting wood from the inside while the shingles above still look fine. Good ventilation is what lets a roof actually reach the lifespan its warranty promises.

The key is balance: roughly equal intake at the soffits and exhaust near the ridge, so air moves continuously through the attic. We assess what you already have, clear blocked soffit vents, and add the right combination of continuous ridge vent, static vents, or intake baffles for your roof. Mixing the wrong exhaust types or starving the intake can short-circuit airflow and make things worse - a fault we find on otherwise decent roofs.

Proper ventilation pays off twice here. In summer it sheds attic heat; in winter, at higher elevations around the Sea-to-Sky and on Fraser Valley hillsides, it keeps the roof deck cold and even, which is one of the most effective defences against ice dams.

How do I know if my attic is poorly ventilated?

Signs include frost or damp on the underside of the sheathing, a musty attic, mould spots, and shingles that age faster than they should. We can inspect and measure intake versus exhaust.

Will adding more vents always help?

No. Ventilation has to be balanced between soffit intake and ridge exhaust. Adding the wrong exhaust or starving the intake can actually reduce airflow, which is a common mistake we correct.
